Junita products are cosmetics, not medical treatments. If your skin is painful, broken or not settling, please see a GP or dermatologist.

In brief

  • By evening, skin has had a long day. Nocturnaid™ is designed to give it a fast, light drink of moisture before bed, without a heavy layer sitting on top.
  • In independent testing, skin hydration rose by an average of 26.2% two hours after application, and every one of the 20 volunteers showed a measurable increase.
  • Hydration then settled gradually, returning to baseline by 24 hours, and we are publishing the full curve.
  • The formula is built around humectants, glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which are known for drawing water into the outer layer of skin.
  • Niacinamide is the third ingredient, alongside plant oils, butters and vitamin E.
  • No irritation or incompatibility was observed or reported by any volunteer.

What your skin needs by evening

By the time evening comes round, your skin has been through a full day of pollution, central heating, air conditioning and changes in temperature. Many people reach for a thick night cream at this point, but not everyone likes the feeling of a heavy layer on their face all night, or on their pillowcase by morning.

When we formulated Nocturnaid™, we wanted something that gives skin a quick, generous drink of moisture right when you apply it, then absorbs rather than sitting on the surface. A pre-bedtime moisture surge, in a texture that feels light.

What we tested, and how

We commissioned an independent study of Nocturnaid™ from Derma Consult Concept GmbH in Bonn, Germany.

Twenty women took part. Hydration was measured objectively with a corneometer, which reads the electrical capacitance of the outer layer of skin, at two, four, eight and twenty-four hours after application, and compared against untreated skin on the same person.

The results

Time after applicationChange in hydration from starting point
2 hours+26.2%
4 hours+6.1%
8 hours+3.5%
24 hoursBack to baseline

The two-hour surge. Two hours after application, skin hydration was up by an average of 26.2%. That is the moisture boost you are looking for before bed.

Every volunteer responded. All 20 people in the study showed a measurable, objective increase in hydration at two hours.

A gradual settle. Over the following hours, hydration eased back gently, and by twenty-four hours it had returned to baseline. That is why Nocturnaid™ is made to be used every evening, as part of your routine.

Plenty of brands publish only their best number. We would rather show you the whole curve, because the people who use Junita® read the details and deserve the full picture.

What is inside, and why it hydrates so quickly

A fast rise in hydration comes down to what is in the jar. Here are the ingredients doing the most work in Nocturnaid™, and what the research says about each.

Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: the humectants

Humectants are ingredients that attract water and hold it in the outer layer of the skin. Nocturnaid™ contains two of the best known.

Glycerin is one of the most widely studied skincare ingredients. A review in the British Journal of Dermatology describes its role in skin hydration, skin elasticity and repair of the epidermal barrier, including improved hydration of the outer skin layer and better barrier function.

Sodium hyaluronate is a form of hyaluronic acid, which is valued for its strong ability to bind water. In a study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, creams containing 0.1% hyaluronic acid led to significant improvements in skin hydration and elasticity compared with a placebo.

Humectants draw water into the skin’s surface layer, which fits the quick rise in hydration we saw at two hours.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, is the third ingredient on the Nocturnaid™ list. Ingredient lists run in order of quantity, so a position that high means a meaningful amount in the formula.

Niacinamide is one of the most researched ingredients in skincare. In laboratory work published in the British Journal of Dermatology, it increased the production of ceramides, the lipids that help hold skin cells together, along with other lipids in the outer skin layer, and the authors concluded it improved the skin’s barrier. That study was carried out on skin cells in the laboratory. In a separate twelve-week study on facial skin, published in Dermatologic Surgery, topical niacinamide was associated with improvements in the appearance of fine lines, uneven spots, redness and sallowness.

Plant oils and butters

Nocturnaid™ includes a blend of plant oils and butters, including evening primrose oil, apricot kernel oil, mango seed butter and cupuaçu butter. These are emollients: they soften and smooth the skin and help give the cream its comfortable feel.

Plant oils as a group have been studied for their role in supporting the skin. A review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences looked at the effects of topically applied plant oils on the skin barrier.

Vitamin E

Nocturnaid™ contains vitamin E, in two forms. Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble antioxidant, and it has been used in dermatology for decades, as a review in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal sets out.

Gentle on the skin

Beyond hydration, one of the results we care about most is how skin tolerated the formula.

Across all twenty volunteers, no incompatibility or irritation was observed or reported by anyone. For skin that reacts easily, that matters as much as the moisture itself.

As with any new product, if your skin is reactive, patch test first.

Frequently asked questions

What does Nocturnaid™ do?

It gives your skin a fast boost of moisture before bed. In independent testing, skin hydration rose by an average of 26.2% two hours after application, and every one of the twenty volunteers showed a measurable increase.

Why does it hydrate so quickly?

The formula contains glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, two humectants. Humectants attract water and hold it in the outer layer of the skin, which fits the quick rise in hydration seen at two hours.

What is niacinamide and why is it in Nocturnaid™?

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 and one of the most researched ingredients in skincare. Laboratory research has linked it to increased production of ceramides, the lipids that help hold skin cells together. It is the third ingredient in Nocturnaid™.

How long does the hydration last?

Hydration peaked at two hours, eased back gradually over the following hours, and had returned to baseline by twenty-four. That is why we recommend using Nocturnaid™ every evening.

Where on the skin was it tested?

On the inner forearm, which is the standard site for corneometer testing because it allows a clean comparison against untreated skin on the same person.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

No incompatibility or irritation was observed or reported by any of the twenty volunteers in the study. If your skin is reactive, patch test first, as you would with any new product.

Is it heavy or greasy?

Nocturnaid™ is designed to be light and fast-absorbing, so it sinks in rather than sitting on the surface of your skin.

Can I use it with other products?

Yes. Apply it to cleansed skin in the evening. If your skin is very dry, you can layer a richer cream on top.
